Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)

Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn, is one of Bangkok’s most striking landmarks. Located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, this temple is best known for its towering central spire (prang), beautifully decorated with colorful porcelain and seashells. Wat Arun is especially breathtaking at sunrise and sunset, when the light reflects off its intricate surfaces, giving it a magical glow.

Why You Should Visit:

  • Iconic riverside temple with unique Khmer-style architecture.
  • Stunning views of the river and Bangkok skyline from the top of the prang.
  • A peaceful, less crowded experience compared to the Grand Palace.
  • Rich symbolism and historical significance dating back to the Ayutthaya period.

How to Get There:

By Boat (most scenic and convenient):

  1. Take the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Tha Tien Pier (N8), which is on the east side of the river, near Wat Pho.
  2. From Tha Tien, take a short ferry ride across the river to Wat Arun Pier (about 5 baht).
  3. The temple is right by the pier – you’ll see the towering spire as you approach.

By BTS Skytrain + Boat:

  1. Take the BTS Skytrain to Saphan Taksin Station (S6) on the Silom Line.
  2. Walk to Sathorn Pier and catch the Chao Phraya Express Boat heading north.
  3. Follow the same route via Tha Tien and cross to Wat Arun.

By Taxi or Grab:

  • You can also take a taxi directly to the west bank, but traffic may be heavy, and boat access is often faster and more scenic.
